Celebrating the Spring Equinox
Happy Spring Equinox! This weekend we welcome this beautiful new season. One of the ways that we can stay connected to (or reconnect with) Nature is by observing and honouring her cycles and rhythms. Here are some ideas for how you may want to celebrate the Spring Equinox.
But first, a little bit about the significance of this shift of season. As we welcome Spring, we welcome back the light. You may have noticed that the days are getting longer and (thankfully) there is still light out even as late as 6:30pm. Light has so much meaning and symbolism connected to it. For me, I think of it as bringing new life. During the winter months we are encouraged to go within, rest, and reflect. As the Spring Equinox nears, you might naturally feel that you have more energy, perhaps you're more inspired, and that extra sunlight might have already started to lift your mood. How can we harness this energy and really flow with it?
Get Outside
You may start to feel a natural desire to be outside more often. Go with it! It's so much fun to walk through your neighbourhood, or through a forest in very early spring. Try to see if you notice anything different between Winter and Spring. Are there new birds that perhaps you didn't notice as much in the winter? New birdsong? Do you see any plants or flowers starting to peek through the snow? Can you notice that the quality of light is shifting from a Winter sun to more of a springtime sun?
Start Seeds (literally) + Reconnect with your intentions
This is a wonderful time of year to get some seeds started and it is also a powerful symbolic ritual for connecting and committing to your intentions for the next season. I find that in order to manifest it's helpful to plant energetic seeds (an example of this could be writing down your intentions) and then do something symbolic in the form of a ritual as a way to anchor that intention into the physical realm. Planting seeds and starting seeds indoors is a wonderful way to do that.
Spring Cleaning
This is something that you may feel naturally drawn to at this time of year. Cleaning and clearing your physical space is a powerful practice that can help make room for whatever it is you're trying to call in, or simply to remove anything extra that doesn't need to be there anymore. This could be done on multiple levels. You could physically clean your living space. You could also think about doing a spring cleanse. This time of year is usually when I recommend doing any sort of cleanse because the energies of the natural world support it and can really assist you in improving your health. Doing a spring detox can be as simple as drinking more water, or it can be quite deep with the intention of doing cellular drainage and detoxification. For deeper forms of detoxing please book an appointment.
Decorate!
This could mean collecting items from Nature and creating an altar, or it could simply mean bringing fresh flowers into your home. Whatever feels pleasing to you is usually the best option.
Cook a Meal
One of the things that we do as a family is we cook a meal, similar to the way we would at Christmas or the Winter Solstice. We make it special and include any seasonal vegetables that we can find. We decorate, light a candle, share what Winter has taught us and how we've grown, and then we share our hopes and wishes for the new season. We say goodbye to Winter and hello to Spring. Death and rebirth. This year I will be making a plate of food as an offering for the spirits.
If you don't have a lot of time or the desire to celebrate in the above mentioned ways, simply acknowledging the changing of the seasons is enough.
Blessings to you and yours on this Spring Equinox.
