Beauty Care

Your skin is your largest organ and the truth is that whatever you put onto your skin will end up in your bloodstream. A simple rule of thumb is if you wouldn't eat it, you shouldn't put it on your body. That goes for every single personal care item you use (shampoo, conditioner, makeup, soaps, moisturizers, deodorant, floss,  toothpaste, serums, etc).

If you want to do an experiment, take any personal care product that you (or your children) currently use and read or look up the full list of ingredients. If the ingredient list is difficult to find, that's usually red flag. If it contains any of the following, it's not a product I'd ever recommend buying again:

  • Parabens (contain the words methyl, butyl, ethyl, propyl)

  • Pthalates (often listed as "fragrance")

  • Mineral oil

  • DEA (diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), and TEA (triethanolamine)

  • PEG (Polyethylene glycol)

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) & Sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)

  • Triclosan

  • Synthetic colours (FD&C or D&C)

  • Diethanolamine

  • Alcohol

  • Petrolatum/petroleum

  • Toluene (often listed on labels as benzene, phenylmethane, toluol and methylbenzene).

Don't assume that just because it comes from a health food store it doesn't contain questionable ingredients. Once you start reading labels you'll very quickly realize that plenty of "green" products are still full of harmful chemicals.

The only two companies that I recommend are the ones listed below. I've used them for years and at this point every single personal care item in my house comes from one of these two Canadian companies. I'm sure there are other great options out there and if you have one that you love please share it! I'd love to look into their ingredients and products. Bonus if they're Canadian! :)
